Big Island, January 23 update

23 01 2013

My long-time friend and travel buddy Fran, who lives in Kentucky, arrived last Thursday. Monday we took a drive down to the south part of the island and I did a bit of snorkeling in some tidal ponds surrounded by lava rock. Late yesterday we went up to Volcano Nat’l Park, which has 2 active eruptions. We got to see the glow and steam from one at the summit of Kiluea after dark. Attended a volcano geology lecture, which was a bit over our heads at this point, but interesting. There are 2 types of lava, including one named: ʻAʻā. Gotta love that word!
